Created for Jackie Kennedy: the birth of a myth
In 1962, Jackie Kennedy, First Lady of the United States, received a gift of rare elegance: a gold-plated S.T. Dupont lighter, adorned with a discreet "J". This present, offered by André Malraux, then Minister of Cultural Affairs under General de Gaulle, sealed a unique bond between the French Maison and the American icon.A few years later, Jackie Kennedy, now Jackie Onassis, made a special request to S.T. Dupont: to create a pen as refined as her treasured lighter. At that time, the Maison had yet to venture into crafting writing instruments. Driven by its legendary audacity, it rose to the challenge.
Thus, in 1973, the very first S.T. Dupont pen was born. Crafted in brass and adorned with a vertical guilloche inspired by the Ligne 1 lighter, the Classique immediately established itself as the world’s first luxury ballpoint pen. Faceted and precious, it became Jackie Kennedy’s accessory of choice and marked the beginning of S.T. Dupont’s Art of Writing.
